How to Find Your Ring Size at Home (Even Secretly)
A ring is one of the most personal gifts you can give, and the one most likely to be the wrong size. Too tight and it sits in a drawer; too loose and it slides off or spins so the stone faces the wrong way. Whether you are planning an engagement, a katb el-ketab, an anniversary or simply buying a ring for yourself online, this guide shows you how to find the right size at home, including how to do it without her knowing.
How ring sizes work
A ring size describes the inside of the band. It can be written as an inside diameter (the distance straight across the inside, in millimetres), an inside circumference (the distance around the inside), or a number from a sizing system. Silvora rings use US sizes, the system most common for online jewelry in Egypt. Our size guide converts each size to diameter and circumference in millimetres.
As a rough guide, most women in Egypt wear between a US 6 and a US 8 on the ring finger, but hands vary widely, so measuring always beats guessing.
Method 1: measure a ring she already wears (the most accurate at home)
If you can borrow a ring that fits the right finger, you have the best possible reference.
- Place the ring on a flat surface.
- Using a ruler with millimetre marks, measure the inside diameter: straight across the widest part of the inside, from inner edge to inner edge. Do not include the metal.
- Compare the number with the diameter column in our size guide. If it falls between two sizes, choose the larger.
Make sure the borrowed ring is worn on the same finger and the same hand. The dominant hand is usually slightly larger, and the ring finger is a little bigger than the little finger.
The secret-measurement version
Planning a surprise? A few ways to borrow without asking:
- Pick a ring she wears on her ring finger, or on the middle finger and size down by about one size.
- Press the ring gently into a bar of soap or a piece of modelling clay to make an impression, then measure the inside of the impression.
- Trace the inside of the ring on paper with a sharp pencil, then measure the circle.
- Ask her sister, mother or best friend, who often know her size or can borrow a ring for you.

Method 2: measure the finger with paper or string
If there is no ring to borrow, you can measure the finger directly.
- Cut a thin strip of paper (about 5 mm wide) or use a piece of non-stretch string.
- Wrap it around the base of the finger, where the ring will sit. It should be snug but not tight.
- Mark the point where the paper overlaps.
- Lay it flat and measure from the end to the mark in millimetres. This is the circumference.
- Find the matching circumference in our size guide.
Measure two or three times to make sure you get the same result, and check that the ring will pass over the knuckle. If the knuckle is noticeably larger than the base of the finger, measure both and choose a size between them.
When to measure (it matters more than you think)
- Measure at the end of the day. Fingers are slightly larger in the evening than in the morning.
- Avoid very hot or very cold moments. Heat makes fingers swell; cold makes them shrink. In an Egyptian summer, avoid measuring straight after coming in from outside.
- Measure at room temperature, with relaxed hands, not after exercise or a salty meal.
Band width changes the fit
A wide band covers more of the finger and feels tighter than a thin band of the same size. If you are choosing a wide band or a statement ring, consider going up half a size. Delicate solitaires and thin stacking rings usually fit true to size. You will find both styles in our 925 silver rings collection, from dainty rings to statement rings.
Engagement and katb el-ketab rings
For engagements, the ring is traditionally worn on the right hand during the engagement and moved to the left after the wedding in many Egyptian families, though customs vary. If you are not sure which hand she will use, measure the finger she is most likely to wear it on first, or choose a size that fits the slightly larger dominant hand.

Ring size reference
These are the standard inside diameters for the most common women's US ring sizes. Use them to check a measurement, then confirm with our size guide.
- US 5: about 15.7 mm inside diameter (49.3 mm circumference)
- US 6: about 16.5 mm (51.9 mm)
- US 7: about 17.3 mm (54.4 mm)
- US 8: about 18.1 mm (57.0 mm)
- US 9: about 19.0 mm (59.5 mm)
Each full size is a difference of roughly 0.8 mm in diameter, which is why measuring to the nearest half millimetre matters.
A surprise-ring checklist
- Confirm which hand and finger she will wear it on.
- Get a size from two sources if you can: a borrowed ring and a trusted friend or relative.
- Choose a design that is easier to adjust if needed, such as a solitaire on a plain band, rather than a full eternity band.
- Order early enough to allow an exchange before the big day.
- Keep the packaging and do not let the ring be worn until the size is confirmed, so it stays eligible for return.
Quick reference: common mistakes
- Measuring the outside of a ring instead of the inside.
- Using a stretchy tape or string.
- Measuring cold fingers early in the morning.
- Forgetting the knuckle.
- Choosing the same size for a wide band as for a thin one.
Frequently asked questions
What is the most common women's ring size in Egypt?
Many women wear between US 6 and US 8 on the ring finger, but there is no safe average. Always measure.
Should I size up or down if I am between sizes?
Size up. A slightly loose ring is more comfortable and safer than one that cannot pass the knuckle.
Can a 925 silver ring be resized?
Plain bands can often be resized by a jeweller, but rings with stones all around the band (eternity or pavé styles) usually cannot. It is better to choose the right size from the start.
Do you deliver rings across Egypt?
Yes. Delivery takes 1–2 business days in Cairo and Giza and 2–4 business days to other governorates, with free shipping on orders over 1,500 EGP.
